Gene Larew News - 2010

It’s stride or glide with Larew® Biffle Bug

Bass pro Tommy Biffle is as particular an angler as they come. Every one of his rods has to go back in its proper place in his rod locker, and with the right sleeve on it. Every worm hook has to be in the proper compartment in his tackle box, according to size. The worm sinker on his line has to match the soft plastic color he’s tossing. And don’t ever get in his boat with muddy shoes.

The point here is that when Tommy Biffle says he has designed the perfect soft plastic bait, it’s time to take notice, and that’s exactly what he’s saying about the brand new Gene Larew® Biffle Bug.

The Biffle Bug incorporates the best features of several top baits into one compact 4.25” design that make it a prime choice for just about any fishing situation. The body is slim yet wide, and covered with concentric “ridges” spaced evenly from its nose to where the tail starts. The ridges give the bait lifelike action and “sound” as a result of friction contact each time one rubs against limbs, grass, rocks or whatever.

Although the first ¾ inch of the 3-inch body is solid for hook support, the rest of it is hollow like a tube, borrowing a feature from the Biffle-O family. The cavity is oval, not round, better fitting the shape of the body and also serving to hold a round rattle in place simply through natural compression. The hollow design works with most rattle styles and makes for an extra-loud sound chamber. Compressed foam and/or scent can also be added to the bug’s cavity.

Outside of the body and on each side are three tentacles about ¾-inch long. They, too, serve as contact points for cover, making the bait react instinctively like a real-life creature each time one hits something. Together the six projections also work as stabilizers to keep the bait running true regardless of how it’s rigged.

Then there’s the legs; hyper-active swimming legs, with one located on each side where the body ends and the tail begins. These legs come from the Biffle-O Lizard and feature a special foot-pad to make them come alive with the slightest movement. They add unbelievable action and versatility whether fishing the bait Texas-rigged, Carolina-rigged or on a jig. When the fish are in a more subtle mood, the legs can be easily removed at the indicated pinch marks.

Totally unique is the Biffle Bug’s tail. It’s obviously part of the Biffle-O family, too, with the patent-pending design of transitioning from the bait’s hollow body into a thin, flexible tail configuration that is convex on the backside and cupped underneath. By design, the tail is wide at its base (approximately ¾ inch) and tapers slowly over its 2 ¼-in length to a rounded tip (approximately ¼ inch). The tail is always “breathing,” even at rest, and offers both form and function to every fishing technique imaginable.

With legs on, the Biffle Bug is the perfect swimming bait. It can be fished alone, used on a jighead, or serve as a trailer. It is also an excellent Carolina-rig bait, especially when a small piece of foam flotation is inserted into its body cavity.

Pinch the legs off and the Biffle Bug becomes the perfect glide bait. The cupped tail provides unmatched action to the lure’s descent. Although more compact and streamlined with the legs removed, the Biffle Bug retains an enticing profile that screams “easy meal.”

Biffle originated the “pitching” technique more than 25 years ago. It remains his signature fishing style today and continues to earn him paycheck after paycheck along the national bass tournament trails. He recently pitched his way to another win at a BASS Elite Series event held on Alabama’s Wheeler Lake. Biffle is among a handful of pros belonging to the “million dollar club” based on tournament earnings.

There’s no question that the pro angler had his own personal interests top of mind when designing the Biffle Bug. Having a bait that was aerodynamically perfect for pitching, and being able to add a rattle inside were big deals to him. It seems to only make sense that other bass anglers take full advantage of what Biffle has created to his liking with this design.

After all, Biffle is just as particular as the bass. The Biffle Bug is the perfect solution to the preferences of both.

The Biffle Bug is packaged 8 per resealable bag. Colors are available in solids with metal flake and two-color laminates, including black neon, green pumpkin, watermelon pepper, smoke silver, blackberry/sapphire, green pumpkin/Christmas tree, green pumpkin candy, dark watermelon candy, smoke neon/pumpkin pepper neon and dark watermelon neon/watermelon neon. A pack of Biffle Bugs retails for around $5.95.
